How to Manage Negative Targeting in Amazon Ads
By Anata Inc. ·
The short answer.
Use Amazon Ads negative targeting to exclude customer queries, products, or brands that do not fit a campaign's product and objective. Start from a preserved search-term or targeting report, verify the advertised ASIN and originating target, and classify the reason before adding an exclusion. Choose the campaign or ad-group level deliberately. For negative keywords, choose phrase or exact match based on the specific query pattern rather than applying a broad block by habit. For product targeting, document the excluded ASIN or brand and the targeting path it affects. Check for duplicates and conflicts, record the change, allow the documented buffer to pass, and compare a clean post-change period. Remove or narrow the exclusion when later evidence disproves the original decision.
Section 01
Define the exclusion and its evidence
Amazon describes negative targeting as a way to prevent ads from appearing for selected keywords, products, or brands. In Sponsored Products, negative controls can support both automatic and manual campaigns. The control is useful only when the team knows what it is excluding and why. A low-level report row, a customer query, and an analyst's broad topic label are not interchangeable evidence.
Begin with the source record that exposed the problem. Preserve the reporting period, campaign, ad group, advertised product, originating target, customer query or product page, clicks, spend, attributed orders, and the campaign objective. Then classify the proposed reason as irrelevant demand, incompatible product, unwanted brand association, poor observed performance, or a temporary operating constraint such as unavailable inventory. Temporary constraints should have an explicit review date.
Do not infer irrelevance from a single unfamiliar phrase. Open the advertised product detail page, read the query literally, and check whether the product can satisfy the need without stretching the listing's visible claims. If the term is relevant but performance is weak, review bid, price, retail readiness, placement, and product-page quality before assigning the entire result to the query. Negative targeting should not hide a correctable operating problem.
Section 02
Choose keyword or product controls deliberately
Amazon documents negative keywords with phrase and exact match options. Negative phrase prevents ads from showing on shopping queries that contain the complete phrase or close variations. Negative exact is narrower and applies when the shopping query contains the exact phrase or a close variation. Choose the smallest control that addresses the observed problem, and retain the exact query beside the normalized analysis label.
Negative products work differently. Amazon says these targets can prevent ads from displaying when a product page ASIN matches the exclusion. Product exclusions may apply at the ad-group or campaign level depending on where they are created. Confirm whether the originating traffic came from product attribute targeting or automatic targeting, then document the affected scope before adding the ASIN or brand.
Avoid translating one bad ASIN into a broad brand exclusion without additional evidence. A brand can contain products that are incompatible, complementary, or relevant to different campaign objectives. Likewise, an exact negative keyword should not be expanded into phrase match merely to reduce review work. Scope is part of the decision. The wider the exclusion, the more opportunity it can suppress and the stronger the supporting evidence should be.
Section 03
Apply the change at the correct level
Before saving an exclusion, search current campaigns and bulk records for the same negative. Check campaign-level and ad-group-level controls so the same term is not blocked twice or contradicted by the intended ownership model. A campaign negative can affect multiple ad groups. An ad-group negative can preserve the term elsewhere when another product or objective still needs access to it.
Amazon's support instructions place negative targeting in campaign manager and document adding keywords or products to the selected campaign and ad group. Record the account, marketplace, campaign, ad group when applicable, negative type, match type, exact value, source report, decision date, operator, and reason. Screenshot-free text records are easier to compare and audit than a folder of unlabeled interface captures.
Amazon states that negative keywords and negative products can have different buffer periods before taking effect. Do not judge the change immediately after it is saved. Confirm that the control appears in the intended location, then wait through the documented period and establish the first eligible post-change review window. If the interface rejects or transforms the value, record the actual saved state rather than the intended entry.
Section 04
Review exclusions as reversible decisions
Compare a clean post-change period with the source period only after the control is active. Review query coverage, clicks, spend, attributed orders, total campaign delivery, budget status, advertised-product availability, and concurrent changes. A drop in spend does not by itself prove improvement, and a higher return metric does not prove the negative caused it when bids, price, inventory, or placements changed at the same time.
Maintain three review outcomes: retain, narrow, or remove. Retain when the original reason still holds and the campaign is operating as intended. Narrow when a phrase, brand, or campaign-level exclusion blocks more than the evidence supports. Remove when the query becomes relevant, the product relationship changes, the original analysis was wrong, or the exclusion was created for a temporary condition that has ended.
Run a periodic conflict audit across active negatives, manual targets, product targets, and campaign objectives. Flag a query or ASIN that is both intentionally targeted and excluded in overlapping scopes. Preserve removed exclusions with their history so the same weak decision is not recreated later. The goal is a controlled eligibility map that operators can explain, not the largest possible negative list. Assign every open conflict an owner and dated resolution record before the next campaign review.
