What is Variation?

A group of closely related products, such as one item in several sizes or colors, sold from a single detail page with a picker for the options. Grouping them pools reviews and traffic instead of splitting them across separate pages.

Why it matters in practice

Variations are the highest-leverage structural decision on a catalog, because they decide whether a shopper who lands on the wrong option finds the right one or leaves. They also decide how your reviews concentrate, since a family shares them and separate listings do not. The failure mode operators hit most is grouping items that are not genuinely the same product to borrow the reviews, which marketplaces treat as a content violation and which leaves shoppers on a page that does not match what they searched for. A worked example: a brand launching a new scent of an existing candle adds it as a child in the family, so it opens with the family's reviews and the shoppers already arriving on that page, rather than sitting alone on a page nobody has found yet.
