What is TACoS?
Total Advertising Cost of Sales
Ad spend divided by total revenue, ads plus organic. It shows whether advertising is growing the whole business, not just the sales it gets direct credit for.
Why it matters in practice
TACoS exists because ACoS quietly ignores the sales advertising helped cause but did not get credited for. Ads drive visits and reviews, both of which feed organic ranking, and organic sales then arrive with no ad cost attached to them. Watched over months, the direction of TACoS tells you something ACoS cannot: if spend holds steady and TACoS falls, organic revenue is growing underneath the advertising, which is what a healthy account looks like. If TACoS climbs while spend is flat, the business is leaning harder on paid traffic to stand still. It is a trend metric rather than a dial. Reading it week to week produces noise, and no single TACoS figure is right for every brand, because the right level depends on margin and on how much of the category is still being bought.
