Listings

What is Indexing?

Whether a marketplace has associated your listing with a given search phrase at all. If a listing is not indexed for a phrase, nothing you do to bidding or price will make it appear in those results.

Why it matters in practice

Indexing is the first question to ask when a listing gets no organic traffic for an obvious phrase, because it separates a visibility problem from a ranking problem. Ranking is about where you sit among the results for a phrase; indexing is about whether you are in that set at all, and the two get confused constantly. In practice you check it by searching the exact phrase together with something unique to your listing and seeing whether the page comes back, then look at whether the phrase actually appears in the title, the bullets or the search terms field. A worked example: a seller wonders why a stainless water bottle never shows for insulated bottle, finds the word insulated nowhere on the listing, adds it to the title and bullets where it reads naturally, and the phrase becomes a page the listing can compete on.
