How to Use Amazon Attribution for Off-Amazon Campaigns

The short answer.

Use Amazon Attribution when a paid or organic campaign outside Amazon sends shoppers to an Amazon product page or Store. Confirm that the advertiser and marketplace are eligible, define one naming system, select the products being promoted, and create a distinct attribution tag for each channel, publisher, campaign, or creative decision you need to compare. Put the generated URL in the final destination, test the click path, and preserve the tag map before launch. Review clicks, detail page views, add-to-carts, purchases, and sales with Amazon's stated attribution method, but do not compare those figures directly with an ad platform that uses a different window or model. Change one controllable variable at a time and keep ordinary Amazon Ads reporting separate.

Section 01

Decide whether Amazon Attribution owns the question

Amazon describes Amazon Attribution as a free, self-service measurement solution for understanding how paid and organic non-Amazon channels influence shopping activity on Amazon. Eligible uses include search, social, display, video, email, affiliate, and influencer traffic that ends on an Amazon product page or Store. Start with a precise question such as which publisher sends qualified product-detail traffic, whether an email launch contributes Amazon purchases, or which creative deserves a controlled follow-up test. Do not use an attribution tag as a substitute for an on-Amazon Sponsored Products or Sponsored Brands report.

Confirm eligibility and access before building the campaign map. Amazon's guide lists professional sellers enrolled in Brand Registry, vendors, and qualifying agencies among the supported users in available countries. Access is through the advertising console under Measurement and Reporting. Record the advertiser, marketplace, brand, account, operator, and access date. If the expected brand or product is missing, resolve account ownership and catalog authorization rather than assigning a tag to a convenient but incorrect product set.

Write the measurement boundary in plain language. Amazon Attribution reports shopping activity Amazon associates with tagged clicks, while the external publisher may report impressions, clicks, sessions, or conversions under a different identity, window, and attribution model. Preserve both systems as separate evidence. The useful reconciliation begins with tagged clicks and destination behavior, then explains definitional differences. It does not force two unlike totals to match or declare one system correct without investigating implementation and scope.

Section 02

Build a durable campaign and tag map

Create a naming convention before creating any tags. Include only dimensions the team will reliably maintain, such as channel, publisher, campaign, audience, creative, destination, marketplace, and launch date. Keep names readable and versioned. Amazon explains that a campaign groups activity for promoted products and that each ad group receives a unique attribution tag. Use that hierarchy deliberately. If one ad group mixes several publishers or creative treatments, the report cannot isolate the decision the operator hoped to make.

Select only the products the external message actually promotes. For a multi-product campaign, document why the products belong together and keep the destination aligned with that set. Generate the attribution URL, place it in the external campaign's final destination, and retain the unmodified generated link in a tag register. Do not shorten or wrap it until the redirect chain has been tested, because an intermediary can drop parameters or replace the final URL. Record every authorized redirect and the final Amazon host.

Test on desktop and phone before launch. Open the exact published creative link, follow every consent or redirect step, confirm that the intended product page or Store loads, and check that the URL has not been rewritten incorrectly. Preserve a safe test record with time, device, publisher preview, final URL, and expected tag. A successful page load proves routing, not conversion attribution. Reporting can lag or apply eligibility rules, so the launch gate is correct implementation and a reproducible click path rather than an immediate purchase row.

Section 03

Read the report using Amazon's definitions

Amazon's guide says attribution tags associate future shopping activity with a measured click and describes a 14-day, last-touch method. Under that method, an eligible conversion within the window is credited to the most recent measured click. Put the model and window beside every review, especially when a publisher dashboard uses a shorter click window, view-through credit, modeled results, or a different time zone. A difference between systems is expected until those definitions, late-arriving data, refunds, and product scope are reconciled.

Review the sequence from delivery to shopping behavior. Start with the external platform's delivered impressions and clicks, then inspect Amazon Attribution clicks, detail page views, add-to-carts, purchases, sales, and relevant product detail. Look for breaks in the chain before judging creative quality. A large publisher-to-Amazon click gap can indicate link implementation, redirects, bots, privacy controls, or reporting definitions. A click-to-detail-page gap can indicate destination or availability problems. Each pattern is a diagnostic lead, not a proven cause.

Use a complete reporting window and label recent periods provisional. Separate campaigns by marketplace and currency before aggregation. Keep promoted products distinct from other attributed products when the report provides that detail. Compare rates only when denominators match. For example, purchase rate based on Amazon-attributed clicks is not the same measure as a publisher conversion rate based on its own clicks or sessions. Preserve the exported report, console filters, download time, and tag register so a later review can reproduce the numbers.

Section 04

Turn evidence into controlled campaign changes

Rank opportunities by the decision they can support. A publisher with reliable tagged traffic but weak product engagement may warrant a destination or message review. Strong detail-page engagement without purchases may call for catalog, availability, price, or offer investigation. Strong attributed purchases with uncertain publisher economics still require verified external spend and fees before a budget decision. Join evidence at the campaign and product level, state every missing cost or data field, and avoid translating attributed sales into profit without margin and return evidence.

Change one controllable variable when practical: creative, publisher, audience, landing destination, promoted product set, or budget. Keep the tag architecture stable unless the measurement question changes. If the tag must change, record a new version and avoid blending pre-change and post-change data. Define the decision threshold before reviewing the result, then use matched windows that account for launch timing, promotions, inventory, price, and external traffic shifts. Amazon Attribution can support the comparison, but it does not establish causal impact by itself.

Audit the register at a regular cadence. Retire tags for ended campaigns, flag live media using unknown links, and verify a sample of final destinations after publisher or site changes. Restrict tag creation to named owners so duplicates do not fragment evidence. The finished operating artifact should include the business question, eligibility record, campaign hierarchy, product set, generated URL, placement, launch test, reporting definition, review window, decision, and rollback. That record makes future optimization faster without inventing certainty the platform does not provide.
