Listings

What is Main Image?

The first image on a listing, shown in search results as well as on the page. It is the single asset most responsible for whether anyone clicks, and marketplaces set strict rules for it, typically requiring the product alone on a plain white background.

Why it matters in practice

The main image does two different jobs and operators usually only think about one of them. On the page it is a product shot; in the results grid it is a thumbnail competing against a screen of other thumbnails at a fraction of the size, where fine detail and thin text disappear. That is why the practical test is to shrink your image to phone-thumbnail size and see whether the product still reads at a glance. A worked example: a supplement brand whose bottle looked good full size found it turned into an unreadable smudge in the grid, cropped tighter so the bottle filled more of the frame, and the same listing started earning clicks it previously lost before anyone ever saw the page.
