What is Freight forwarder?
A company that arranges the movement of your goods across carriers and borders without owning the ships or planes itself. They book the space, prepare the documents, and coordinate the handoffs, which is why most importers work through one rather than direct.
Why it matters in practice
A forwarder is a coordinator, not a carrier. They buy transport capacity in volume and resell it, prepare export and import paperwork, and arrange the trucking at each end, so a single door to door quote can cover a move that actually involves five different companies. The practical benefit is one point of contact when something slips, which on an international shipment it usually does. The practical caution is what a quote leaves out: duty, customs filing, destination handling and the final delivery are often quoted separately, so two forwarder quotes are only comparable once you list what each one includes. Ask for the inclusions in writing before comparing the headline numbers.
