How to Fulfill Shopify Local Delivery Orders
By Anata Inc. ·

The short answer.
Set up Shopify local delivery only for locations with accurate inventory and a delivery area the team can actually serve. Define eligibility by supported radius or postal codes, price rules, instructions, and realistic delivery communication before launch. For each order, verify payment, risk, assigned location, address, customer instructions, items, and delivery window before marking it ready. Shopify local delivery moves from unfulfilled to ready for delivery and then delivered; marking delivered completes fulfillment and sends the customer confirmation. Preserve proof under the approved privacy policy, keep failed attempts and cancellations out of the delivered state, and reconcile every open local delivery order daily. Review service quality separately from revenue attribution.
Section 01
Design the service area from operating evidence
Activate local delivery per location only after confirming the location fulfills online orders and holds the relevant inventory. Shopify supports eligibility based on a distance radius or postal codes and allows location-specific zones and price rules. Start with a bounded area the team can serve through traffic, staffing, vehicle, and cutoff variability. Do not publish a wide radius because the setting permits it if the operation cannot meet the implied service.
Validate addresses at the edge of every zone, overlapping locations, neighboring regions, and unsupported accelerated checkout paths. Shopify documents product and checkout considerations that can affect whether local delivery appears. Capture the chosen location, zone definition, price rule, delivery information, and owner. Recheck after any location, inventory, checkout, or third-party shipping app change because those systems can alter eligibility.
Section 02
Prepare the order before changing status
Filter the order queue to local delivery and review payment, fraud or hold state, location, address, item quantities, special instructions, and promised timing. Shopify lets customers add delivery instructions, which should be treated as fulfillment input rather than guaranteed permission for an unsafe or inaccessible drop. Clarify ambiguous instructions through the approved service process before dispatch and avoid copying private details into an informal driver sheet.
Pick and pack under the same item-control standard as a carrier shipment. Confirm product, quantity, condition, temperature or handling needs, packaging, and order identity. Shopify moves an order from unfulfilled to ready for delivery when preparation is complete. Do not use ready as a queue-clearing shortcut. A package marked ready should be physically staged, assigned, and findable by the delivery operator.
Section 03
Build a controlled dispatch manifest
Create a route manifest from orders that are truly ready, using only the customer and delivery details needed for the trip. Record driver or service owner, planned sequence, package count, special handling, dispatch time, and approved proof method. Keep payment, marketing, and unrelated account data off the manifest. If a third-party delivery service is used, confirm its app and status behavior against Shopify before relying on it.
At dispatch, count every package and verify the order-to-address mapping. Separate multiple orders at the same building and similar customer names. Define what the driver does when there is no safe location, access is blocked, the customer cannot be reached, or the address differs from the order. Failed-attempt rules should protect the package and customer without allowing a driver to invent a substitute address or delivered status.
Section 04
Close delivery only after the real handoff
Shopify's local delivery workflow progresses through unfulfilled, ready for delivery, and delivered. Mark delivered only after the approved handoff or drop condition is satisfied. Shopify says marking delivered changes the order to fulfilled and sends a delivery confirmation email. Because local delivery does not use ordinary carrier tracking events in Shopify, the operator's status action is a consequential customer message and inventory record.
Capture the allowed proof, time, and exception note without exposing more personal information than necessary. If delivery fails, keep it out of delivered status, return the package to the controlled location, and record the next action. Shopify can cancel a delivery and return it from ready for delivery to unfulfilled. Pair that status change with the business decision about retry, pickup, shipping, refund, or cancellation.
Section 05
Reconcile the open route every day
At route close, reconcile dispatched packages to delivered, failed, canceled, and returned-to-location states. Investigate any order still ready with no package, any package with no order, and any delivered status lacking the approved proof. Check inventory and customer communication after edits, refunds, or cancellations. One unresolved local delivery should remain visible rather than being hidden by a bulk fulfillment action.
Review time to ready, route aging, failed attempts, address corrections, damages, status reversals, support contacts, and notification gaps. Segment by location and service area before comparing performance. These measures indicate operating quality but do not prove that local delivery caused conversion or revenue. Change the zone, promise, price rule, staffing, or eligible catalog only when the evidence identifies a specific failure mode and rollback path.
Test the complete flow whenever checkout or fulfillment configuration changes. Use a safe order that cannot be mistaken for a prospect, payment, or real shipment, and suppress customer or sales follow-up under the approved test process. Confirm an eligible address sees local delivery, an ineligible address does not, the order reaches the correct location, instructions are visible to the operator, ready status does not send the wrong carrier message, delivered status sends the intended confirmation, and a failed attempt can return to an actionable state. Remove the test order from operating and revenue reports. Save the configuration version and results so a later incident can distinguish a new defect from a known limitation. If a safe test cannot be created without triggering real communications or fulfillment, rely on existing production evidence and record that the end-to-end state was not live-tested. Review the route at opening and close, confirm returned packages are physically accounted for, and keep every address or delivery exception attached to one accountable operator until the order reaches a truthful final state.
