How to Change Shopify Fulfillment Locations
By Anata Inc. ·

The short answer.
Change a Shopify fulfillment location only while the affected items remain eligible and unfulfilled, after confirming the destination can fulfill online orders, has the right sellable inventory, supports the delivery method, and can still meet the customer promise. Review holds, partial quantities, edits, service assignments, routing recommendations, labels, pick work, and transfers before moving anything. Shopify does not allow the same location change for local delivery and in-store pickup orders. Record the original and new locations, items, quantities, reason, approver, and resulting promise. Cancel or correct duplicate warehouse work, release inventory at the old location, and verify the order, inventory, tracking, and customer communication after reassignment.
Section 01
Confirm that reassignment is the right control
A location change is a manual override to the fulfillment assignment, not a general inventory transfer or routing-rule edit. Use it when an unfulfilled order must move because of stock, capacity, shipping cost, service availability, or delivery timing. If the same pattern affects many new orders, correct inventory, location eligibility, or routing rules instead of repeatedly overriding individual work. Preserve the order-level reason so the pattern can be analyzed later.
Shopify says fulfillment location can be changed for eligible unfulfilled work, but not for local delivery or in-store pickup orders. Check the delivery method before proceeding. Review whether an app or fulfillment service owns the request, whether a label or pick task already exists, and whether the order has been edited, split, held, or partially fulfilled. A visually unfulfilled line can still have downstream work that must be canceled or reassigned.
Section 02
Validate the destination location
Confirm that the destination is active, permitted to fulfill online orders, and configured for the order's delivery method. Shopify assigns online orders according to available inventory and configured routing behavior across active locations. Review the destination's inventory state, committed units, holds, incoming transfers, safety stock, staffing, cutoff, carrier collection, packaging, and restricted-item capability. Available in an interface does not always mean physically ready to ship.
Compare the complete order promise from each location: pick readiness, transfer need, shipping service, zone, delivery estimate, package split, cost, and customer commitment. Do not move the order simply because one rate is lower if the location lacks the item or misses the promise. When no location can fulfill the complete order, decide explicitly whether to split, transfer stock, hold, edit, or contact the customer through the approved support process.
Section 03
Protect inventory and warehouse ownership
Before saving the change, tell the original location or system to stop work. Cancel pick tasks, packing slips, fulfillment-service requests, or label creation that should not continue. Verify how committed inventory moves between locations in the current Shopify state and connected warehouse system. Do not manually add stock to the destination merely to make the order move; that can create phantom availability and a second shortage later.
Create a change record with order, line items, quantities, original location, destination, delivery method, reason, inventory evidence, operator, approver, and timestamp. Use internal references rather than customer contact information in shared audit notes. If a physical transfer is required, give it its own transfer identifier, expected receipt, and owner. A fulfillment reassignment should not pretend inventory has already arrived.
Section 04
Change only the intended items
Open the unfulfilled or in-progress fulfillment, choose Change location, select the intended items and quantities, and select the verified destination. Shopify can recommend the next location when order routing is configured, but the recommendation still needs operational review. Check that no unrelated line or already completed quantity is included. For a split order, preserve which items remain at each location and which package promise the customer will see.
After saving, reopen the order and confirm location, quantities, status, service assignment, fulfillment holds, inventory commitments, and timeline. Check the destination queue rather than relying on the order screen alone. If a connected service did not receive the updated work, stop and reconcile the integration before retrying. Repeated submissions can produce duplicate requests even when the page appears unchanged.
Section 05
Reconcile the promise after the move
Recalculate the shipping option and expected handoff from the new origin. Review address classification, carrier service, pickup schedule, cutoff, packaging, and tracking. If the delivery promise changes materially, route communication through the approved customer-support process. Do not silently substitute a slower service or send an automated shipped notice before the package exists. Keep any price or refund decision with the authorized commerce owner.
At the original location, verify that work stopped and the inventory commitment was released correctly. At the destination, verify pick acceptance, physical stock, package creation, label origin, carrier scan, and tracking. Reconcile the order after fulfillment so analytics and cost reporting attribute labor, inventory, and shipping to the actual origin. Investigate every moved order that later becomes unfulfilled, oversold, duplicated, or late.
Review location-change reasons on a fixed cadence. Repeated stock mismatches point to inventory controls; repeated cost moves point to routing or rate logic; repeated capacity moves point to staffing or cutoff design. Measure only verified records and do not claim that reassignment improved cost or speed without a comparable baseline. The goal is a controlled exception that remains explainable from assignment through delivery, then informs a better default process.
Section 06
Complete a three-owner location handoff
Include reassigned orders in the daily location handoff. The sending location confirms that no package, label, or pick remains active. The receiving location confirms inventory and ownership. The support owner sees any customer-promise change. Close the handoff only when those views agree and the destination queue contains the intended quantities.
For recurring moves, sample orders against routing inputs and inventory snapshots from the time of assignment rather than today's corrected state. This preserves why the system made its original choice and helps improve routing. Keep customer communication, refunds, and service recovery outside the location-change permission unless the assigned owner authorizes them separately.
